Direct USB — recommended
Connect USB-B, USB-C or USB TO HOST directly to the computer. Most instruments need no additional MIDI box.
Get started with your instrument
A digital piano or MIDI keyboard can connect in several ways. Direct USB is the simplest, but older MIDI DIN sockets, TRS MIDI and some wireless options can work too.
Our recommendation
For the simplest stable setup: piano → USB cable → computer → browser. If your instrument has USB TO HOST, USB-B or MIDI-compatible USB-C, use that first.
The most common connection
The cable carries performance data between your piano and computer: which notes you play, their velocity, releases and pedal messages.
MusicLevelUp does not need to record the piano’s sound. MIDI sends playing information rather than an audio signal.
Choose the right cable
Look on the back or underside for USB TO HOST, MIDI OUT or MIDI labels.

Connect the piano’s MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN of a MIDI-to-USB interface, then connect the interface to your computer. OUT → IN matters.
TRS MIDI may use Type A or Type B wiring. Check the keyboard manual before buying an adapter.
Browser
Your browser needs permission to access MIDI devices. This requires a secure HTTPS connection.
For an easy setup, use a recent desktop version of Chrome or Edge. Web MIDI support differs between browsers and devices.
Quick diagnostic
Connect and turn on your instrument, then run the test. The page will list available MIDI inputs and the last received note.
The test stays in your browser: play a note to check that MIDI input responds.
Connect and turn on your instrument, then start the test.
Four steps
Ready to play?
Once your keyboard is detected, work on a score, improvise or train your ear.
